Guess Who's Killing the Magazine Game?

Chillin’ the Game

For more than two decades, Folio's Eddie & Ozzie Awards have recognized excellence in magazine editorial and design across all sectors of the industry.  Over 2,500 entries were narrowed down to a pool of roughly 800 finalists by a panel of industry judges. A total of 263 awards were given out across 33 categories—and Chill snagged two major ones.

Chill won in the consumer category of Best Launch, New Magazine, proof, the editors believe, that young men of color are hungry for content that elevates, educates, and inspires, rather than dumbs down. (And we leave in the fun stuff too, like movies, art, music, sex, and sneakers.)

The winners were announced at Folio’s annual awards gala event in New York City, where more than 350 magazine media industry bigwigs gathered to celebrate the best in the biz.

Another prestigious honor went to Retrograde Communications, Pride Media's creative team behind several magazines—Chill, The Advocate, and Plus magazines. The editorial team, including editor in chief Gerald Garth and editorial director Diane Anderson-Minshall, received the Editorial Team of the Year Award.

"And this is only the beginning," said Garth. "Chill is committed to highlighting the unique experiences and perspectives of young men of color. At Chill, we know there are layers to this! We’re building our team, building our brand, building our voice."

Anderson-Minshall added that the Folio awards helped reinforce that the voices and experiences of young men of color matter and capturing and sharing them authentically and boldly matter too.

"Understanding the importance of representation," says Garth, "we're dedicated to continuing to bring a fresh and affirming lens to the life of the millennial man of color."
