New Must-Have Book Dandy Lion Celebrates the Black Bon Vivant

The word “dandy” suggests an effete (likely white) man with a thin mustache and bespoke suit, perhaps en route to a Noël Coward play. But what about dandy and hip-hop? In Shantrelle Lewis’s new photobook, Dandy Lion: The Black Dandy and Street Style, the two things go together like a tie and pocket square.

Profiling modern dandies like Janelle Monae and Tiq Milan, Lewis declares black dandyism as “a complex dance between race, class, gender, and style.” It’s the same dance hip-hop has been vibing to since the ’70s.
